Der natürliche Feind des Flugzeug-Kolbenmotors ist Korrosion. Steht ein Flugzeugmotor länger oder ist das Öl bereits älter, so kann es dazu kommen, dass sich Feuchtigkeit im Motorinnenraum bildet. Diese setzt sich dann an den Teilen des Motors ab, bei denen das Öl beispielsweise schon abgetropft ist. Gerade oberliegende Nockenwellen neigen dann dazu, an Stellen zu korrodieren, an denen es keine schützende Ölschicht mehr gibt.
